If you are looking for a way to introduce your preschooler to movies for the first time, or maybe want to enjoy a holiday movie night with very young children, then Angela’s Christmas may be just the thing for your family. At just 30 minutes, the length couldn’t be better for a preschooler.
Impressive literary origins
This Christmas special recently debuted on Netflix. The quality of the story is outstanding, and far above your average holiday special. This is because the program is based on a children’s story by acclaimed author Frank McCourt called “Angela and the Baby Jesus.” McCourt is the Irish-American author known for winning the Pulitzer Prize for Angela’s Ashes. Angela is McCourt’s mother, and we can assume that this touching story is inspired by actual events.
The story of Angela’s Christmas
In Angela’s Christmas, Mother is struggling to raise her four children, including Angela. They are good kids but a busy brood, and Angela is a free spirit. She’s a girl with a big heart, but she likes to do things her way, and this isn’t always easy for Mother. Angela gets into trouble when she sees that the baby Jesus in the nativity of the cold church is wearing only a diaper, and she makes it her mission to help “warm up” the baby.
The adventures and misadventures that follow will keep very young children entertained and will warm the hearts of all grownups watching. Older kids won’t mind this program either, especially because it’s nice and short.
A sweet story for Christmas
The story is set in the early twentieth century in Limerick, Ireland, where McCourt and his mother grew up. For Christians such as myself, it’s refreshing that the story centers on the Angela’s admiration for the baby Jesus. The whole point of Christmas is to celebrate Jesus’s birthday, and this is special to Angela. It usually goes unmentioned in most Christmas specials. However, just because this Christmas special is more religious than most doesn’t mean that families of any faith background or none at all can’t enjoy it.
The animation is beautiful, and Angela’s Christmas is lovingly told. Enjoy it with your children on Netflix tonight.
