I’m happy to report that there’s some awesome family viewing this weekend. Christopher Robin is now playing in theaters, and Netflix has renewed two wonderful series that are perfect for your family movie night: Anne with an E and The Worst Witch. Enjoy, and let me know what you end up watching in the comments section!
A very original take on the world of Winnie the Pooh with special appeal for adults, especially sentimental ones. Set just after World War II, Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) is a modern father facing all the usual pressures of work and family. But in the struggle to please his boss, he’s lost sight of what’s really important. The solution? To reconnect with the beloved characters invented by his father A.A. Milne during his childhood: Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and the whole gang. But when Tigger and friends go missing, it’s up to Christopher Robin to help Winnie the Pooh find them and bring them back to their home in the Hundred Acre Woods. With beautiful and realistic animation the stuffed animals of Christopher Robin’s childhood are brought to life, helping him to form the bond he’s missed out on with his own daughter. Best for kids seven and up.
Anne with an E
How I love Anne with an E, and I’m so glad Netflix renewed if for a second season. AmyBeth McNulty’s Anne Shirley is lovable and loquacious, with a spirit that is nothing less than indomitable. Her optimism in the face of almost outrageous adversity makes her an inspiring role model. She goes above and beyond always to remain true to herself, teaching others around her to be a little kinder and gentler to themselves and others along the way. This take on the literary classic Anne of Green Gables is a little darker than other renditions for the large and small screen. But girls 11 and up will find the portrayal of nineteenth century life on Prince Edward Island fascinating, and Anne as a charming, brilliant, and fascinating heroine.
The Worst Witch
My eight-year-old daughter and I are obsessed! Sweet and magical, The Worst Witch on Netflix is perfect for kids who love stories of enchantment, but aren’t quite ready for the darker themes and scarier scenes of Harry Potter. Common Sense Media describes it as “mild.” The Worst Witch portrays the struggle of Mildred Hubble (Bella Ramsey) to fit into the witching world without the benefit of an upbringing by parents who are witches and warlocks. Instead, her single mom is just a normal person. Mildred’s peers and teachers consider her to be “the worst witch,” because she constantly seems to make a mess of her spells and crash-lands on her broomstick. But Mildred is determined and resourceful, and kids age six to nine will absolutely love her.
