Hey everyone! Personally, I’m thrilled it’s Friday, because I had a stupid week, and it didn’t even rain! I trust and hope you fared much, much better. But the weekend’s here now, so let’s see what’s waiting at the theater that can take our minds off annoying coworkers! How about some Chris Pratt? Or Zoe Saldana?
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOLUME 2
Superhero delite! Our gang of mismatched superheroes is back together battling their personal issues just as hard as their enemies. This is definitely one of those movies that benefits from 3D—so do try. Kurt Russell’s brilliant portrayal of a long-lost parent will leave no doubt in your mind as to who the star of this particular installment really is. The whole gang is back—Peter (Pratt), Gamora (Saldana) with her sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Brad Cooper)—and baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), who’s a lot of fun if you think kids are cute (just kidding. They are). Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) of the Sovereigns is our gold-skinned antagonist, determined to retrieve what the Guardians stole. Also featured is Yondu (Michael Rooker) of the Ravagers, who goes against Stakar’s (Sylvester Stallone) dictates to become Ayesha’s tool (no, not that tool).
That’s it in broad strokes. There are powerful emotional subplots I won’t ruin. Everything you expect from a superhero flick is there—the camaraderie, the humor (if a tad annoying), the awesome CGI, the fun soundtrack, and all those wonderful things. The action is satisfying. So it’s just more of the same, and that’s really its flaw. It has a tendency to meander, and conflicts are not as clear as they could have been. And, you might get tired of Peter’s personal issues. But I’m just being a critic now. Go see it. It’ll be a fun (if weird. Well, it is James Gunn) Friday night. Here’s the trailer:
And that’s really the star of this weekend’s crop, darlings. I know, slim pickings, especially if you’re not into superhero swill. But, give it a try! The CGI is stupendous, and Marvel has come a long way—cutting loose in ways they would’ve been terrified to just a year ago. If the answer is still no, rest up! Because next week we have the gorgeous Charlie Hunnam vs an evil Jude Law amidst some stunning visuals and mind-blowing fight scenes. And the week after that, look out—it’s the mother of all sci fi flicks! I’m getting chills just thinking about May 19th. Anyhow, let me know how it goes this weekend, and most of all, have fun!
