Hey there, everyone! I hope you’re enjoying the pleasant weather before Fall starts to envelop us within its damp, chilly fingers. To further your enjoyment, let me tell you about some great flicks awaiting you at the theater!
JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK
Hottie Tom Cruise returns as Jack Reacher, ass-kickin’ ex-military guy, determined to get justice any which way, since the institutions and politicians won’t help. This time around, he happens to talk to his replacement in DC, Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), and decides he likes the sound of her voice. So he heads over to meet her, only to find that she’s been arrested for espionage by top brass (Robert Knepper). Coincidentally, he’s also pinned with a 16-year old murder and a paternity suit. Of course the duo joins ranks and goes on the run to expose the baddies, which includes the Hunter (Patrick Heusinger). You’ll have a rockin’ good time watching Tom kick ass. Yup, he’s still got it! He still sizzles on that screen. Check him out:
Cha-ching! This was the real surprise last week, and not just for me: I’m pretty sure none of those jaded film folk thought Ben Affleck had that kinda draw. GONE GIRL was a bestseller before they made it into a movie, but The Accountant? Some low-key flick about an Asperger’s-inflicted, mob-boss-helping accountant with some interesting survival skills? No one believed it would make $25M over one weekend, including yours truly! But, to be fair, there was a fair amount of marketing in the trades and festivals. So there’s that. Still, the success of this modest flick should not be scoffed at, not at time when studios are hell-bent on making endless sequels and kissing up to fanboys to ensure some sort of profit. Miracles do happen, ladies and gents! Plus, it had a good script, and was well-directed. Never abandon those dreams. Here’s the trailer:
OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL
And here we have Hollywood’s sequel to the successful OUIJA BOARD from 2014. It’s1960’s Los Angeles, and a single mom (Elizabeth Reaser) and her two little girls (Annalise Basso, Lulu Wilson) are making a living working the séance scam. Then, one of the girls suggests getting an Ouija board to liven things up for their customers. Yeah, kiddo, great idea!… not. It’s light fare if you’re a hardcore horror fan, yet worth the ticket because the production value is excellent, as is the acting. Here’s the trailer:
But you know what’s really terrifying? Real life. As in COLONIA. This really happened in Chile. I could not stop thinking about it for days. It ruined my entire weekend. After I finished watching it, I stared blankly at the screen all the way through the end of the credits, grateful simply to be living in the free world. Emily Watson and Daniel Bruhl are utterly brilliant in this horrifying thriller. I promise you, it’ll chill you to your bones. It’s free on Netflix:
Now how’s that for a Halloween scare?? Tweet me if you agree! BWAHAHAHAHA!
