If you are looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon with your little princess, then the new My Little Pony Pinkie Pie Party DVD just might be for you. It has adorable written all over it. The ponies are super cute, the dialogue is sparkling, and Pinkie Pie’s song “Smile” from the episode “A Friend in Deed” had my three year old giggling and dancing all over the room. In fact, the song has been stuck in my head, but that’s not a bad thing because I really like it.
I grew up with My Little Pony, so seeing my daughter play with the ponies and watching these episodes brings back great memories. Watching the new episodes together is making some great new memories for us too. We dance together, have tea parties, or just chill while watching the episodes.
The show is incredibly fast paced and could benefit from a breather every once in a while, but the non-stop action reflects the “super hyper” personality of the show’s lead pony, Pinkie Pie. She is happy go lucky, maybe a little ditzy, but lots of fun. She sometimes annoys her friends with her “over-the-top, super-hyper antics” (according to Twilight) and relentless cheerfulness (she uses words like “fun-errific”), but she’s so sweet and lovable that they don’t stay mad for long.
The show is completely family friendly, but there is some clever humor worked in that parents will enjoy, as if winking to the grown-ups and saying, “We know this show is hyper, but look how much fun you’re having!”
Overall, the My Little Pony Pinkie Pie Party DVD features some valuable and sweet lessons about friendship, including trusting your friends and the true meaning of friendship. “Always expect the best from your friends,” writes Twilight Sparkle in a letter.
My Little Pony Pinkie Pie Party DVD is available exclusively at Walmart, with party products for your perfect Pinkie Pie party in both the DVD and Toy section. The “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” series airs on The HUB TV Network. The My Little Pony Pinkie Pie Party DVD includes the following episodes: “Feeling Pinkie Keen,” “Party Of One,” “Baby Cakes,” “A Friend In Deed,” and “Too Many Pinkie Pies.” It’s bonus features include a sing-along and a party activity kit.
Reel Mama’s recommendation: 3 and up. The first episode “Feeling Pinkie Keen” does contain a scary scene with a hydra dragon, so parents may want to preview that episode. That same episode features Twilight Sparkle’s scientific curiosity repeatedly getting her into accidents, even having an anvil and a grand piano fall on her. At first I was bothered that the studious character seemed to be getting “punished” for her curiosity, but the accidents are meant to be slapstick funny in a Road-Runner-Wile-E.-Coyote way. The final lesson she writes about in a letter is a good one: “There are wonderful things in this world you just can’t explain, but that doesn’t make them any less true. Sometimes you need a friend to show you the way.”
Total running time: 110 Minutes
