If you are like me, you face a dilemma every school morning: what to pack in your child’s lunches. And if you are like me, the unhealthy pre-packaged alternatives for packing in that lunch make you cringe. We usually don’t have the luxury of time on school mornings to prepare something elaborate, yet we want them to eat well, and we need convenience.
I was recently reminded of a brilliant solution for this problem: raisins! Specifically, California raisins.

My bias as a California girl aside, I recently had the pleasure of attending the California Raisins Live Party with my daughter, where we got to hang out with a very special VIP: It was at this back-to-school, or should I say SNACK-to-school, party, that we experienced all the glories that California raisins have to offer kids’ lunch boxes. There is lots to love about California raisins, my personal favorite being how CREATIVE you can get with them! Inspired by this party, I created an easy, healthy, YUMMY popcorn trail mix recipe that you can enjoy on your next family movie night or pack in your kids’ lunch boxes as a healthy snack. I used a combination of California raisins: chocolate covered, yogurt covered, and golden…mmm! I used microwaved kettle corn for the popcorn, added roasted nuts, and sweetened shaved coconut. I am all about easy and quick, and this recipe can be thrown together in no time.
The possibilities are really endless for creating popcorn trail mix with raisins as the main ingredient to add just the right hint of sweetness. You could add almonds, sunflower seeds, granola, “O” cereal, or sesame sticks, just to name a few.
Hanging out with the California Raisin, we learned a thing or two about him. Not only are California raisins easy and convenient, but they are satisfying, meaning your kids will be less hungry before, during, and after school! And this is really important to me: there is no added sugar. California raisins have nothing to hide: they are natural and oh-so-tasty. So throw a few on top of cereal or a bagel, or add some to yogurt in the morning. Have a canister of home made raisin popcorn trail mix in an easy-to-open canister for after school. Make a batch on a school night and bag them up in snack baggies for quick-and-easy lunch prep. And don’t forget to enjoy them on family movie night when you are celebrating the start of another successful school year.
Let’s eat to that! Here’s a fun idea for a build-your-own trail mix with California Raisins:
