“Sesame Street” is famous for its brilliant spoofs of popular TV shows, from “NCIS” to “Mad Men.” Now the “Sesame Street” producers have done it again with a startlingly accurate parody of “Downton Abbey” called “Upside Downton Abbey.” In it a perfect Muppet image of the family butler Carson struggles to appease the Muppet Dowager Countess Violet. Carson pricelessly punctuates every sentence with “mum.” The Dowager is quite displeased that her tea, crumpets, and steak and kidney pie will not stay where they are supposed to and keep falling away from the table setting. Reason being that they are literally upside down.
Never one to challenge the status quo, Carson nevertheless comes up with a solution: change Upside Downton Abbey to Right Side Upton Abbey. Sounds good to me. I won’t give away where the steak and kidney pie ends up.
Watch and enjoy the spoof here. And if this isn’t a fabulous reason, along with “Downton” itself, to support PBS, I don’t know what is:
Something that would quite certainly ruffle feathers upstairs and down at Downton is what I found on the “Sesame Street” Youtube page: ads for Beck’s Beer. One ad was directly over the screen of the skit, and another was off to the right. See for yourself in this screen shot:
Appalling. Seriously Youtube, can’t you filter your ads?
Parents, go to SesameStreet.com to watch the skit with your kids 🙂
