Welcome to Reel Mama’s weekly What to Watch for Families! Here I’ll be summarizing at least three family movies or shows that are worthy of your attention every Tuesday, when Hollywood and independent distribution companies usually debut new titles for home entertainment.
Today is Stranger Things Day! Who knew? I can’t think of a better way to kick things off. If you’re looking for something to binge watch with your teens that will likely take you back to your own childhood, look no further. Stranger Things is my personal favorite Netflix original series, and it has a legion of die-hard fans.
Stranger Things perfectly captures 1980s zeitgeist in the best tradition of Steven Spielberg storytelling. With elements of E.T. and other 1980s classics like War Games, the movie can best be described as sci-fi action with a little bit of horror. A plucky group of tween boys seek to get to the bottom of a mystery when their friend and fellow Dungeons and Dragons fanatic Will Byers disappears. Adding to the strangeness of Stranger Things is the appearance of a young girl with telekinetic abilities named Eleven. The boys soon discover that the strange occurrences are connected to something sinister going on at the local science lab.
Stranger Things has some language and sexual innuendo, so I would recommend it for thirteen and up. Teens will get a kick out of the 1980s set pieces that will seem like ancient history to them. Parents will enjoy recalling what things were like during childhood. (Remember how great it was to ride our bikes anywhere we wanted?)
Season 3 of Stranger Things should be wrapping up filming this month. Netflix hasn’t announced an official release date yet, but this awesome time warp of a “trailer” announcing a new mall in Hawkins, Indiana, where Stranger Things is set, has been released.

If your youngster has more sophisticated tastes and grew up with Winnie the Pooh, then Christopher Robin is for your family. This sweet but slowly-paced movies is available on Blu-rayDVD, on demand, and streaming on Amazon today. It’s a sequel of sorts to the Winnie the Pooh series with Christopher Robin, played by Ewan McGregor of Moulin Rouge fame, all grown up. He is unfortunately obsessed with work to the point of neglecting his family. It’s going to take a village, in the form of his old friends Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and more, to help him realize what’s really important. The animated stuffed animals are absolutely flawless and not to be missed. The movie is okay for ages seven and up, with more details available here.
The Incredibles 2
What mom doesn’t wish that she could be recognized as a superhero for just one day? Incredibles 2 pays homage to all “supermoms” who do their best to master the juggle and balance home and family. At the same time, it hilariously honors dads who take on the responsibilities of managing the home. This Disney Pixar sequel picks up on where The Incredibles left off without missing a beat. Available on DVD/Blu-ray, on demand and Amazon streaming today. Full review here.
