Want to see the Oscar-nominated films before the Academy Awards on February 24? Many are still in theaters, while others on on DVD or on demand. This weekend many of the Oscar-nominated short films hit theaters in a special screening. Check your local art house for details or click here for more information.
Below you’ll find some of my recommendations of 2013 Oscar-nominated films to enjoy before Oscar night in theaters or on DVD.
Almost all of the Oscar nominees for Best Picture are still in theaters. They include “Argo,” “Amour,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Lincoln,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” and “Django Unchained.”
“Beasts of the Southern Wild” is also available on DVD and in some theaters (check your local listings).
REEL MAMA’S PICKS FOR OSCAR-NOMINATED FILMS IN THEATERS
Want to know more about some of these films? Here’s my take on why “Argo” is the surprise front runner of awards season. You can also check out my review of “Les Miserables.” I’ll be publishing my review of “Beasts of the Southern Wild” soon.
A favorite of mine was “Hitchcock,” the story of the making of “Psycho” and Hitchcock’s relationship with his wife Alma. It’s a dark comedy starring Anthony Hopkins, having transformed his entire look to bear an uncanny resemblance to the Master of Suspense. It has received a nomination for Best Makeup and Hair Styling. Click here for my review.
Of course the smash hit “The Hobbit” is also still in theaters. The JRR Tolkien classic children’s novel adaptation has been nominated for Best Makeup and Hair Styling, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects. Click here for my review.
Here at Reel Mama I specialize in family films, so I’m paying special attention to the Best Animated Feature category. In this category we have “Wreck-It Ralph” still in theaters. You can click here for my review of the clever film about a down-and-out video game “villain” who wants nothing more than acceptance and friendship.
REEL MAMA’S PICKS FOR OSCAR-NOMINATED FILMS ON DVD
Parents, rejoice! Four of the nominees for Best Animated Features are now on DVD to enjoy with your kids: “Frankenweenie,” “Paranorman,” “Brave,” and “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.” Click here for my review of Disney Pixar’s “Brave,” which I admired for its uncommon portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship.
I am also going to recommend two Oscar-nominated versions of Snow White: “Mirror Mirror,” which has a well-deserved nomination for its incredible costumes (my review here), and “Snow White and the Huntsman,” nominated for Best Visual Effects and Costume Design (my review here). “Mirror Mirror” can be enjoyed by kids eight and up, while “Snow White and the Huntsman” is more suitable for a teen audience.
