Disclosure: Thanks to Paramount for the Blu-Ray Addams Family and Addams Family Values screener and Halloween fun pack!
If you grew up watching the reruns of the 1960s black and white series that ran for just two seasons, it may have a special place in your heart. In today’s cynical times, it’s hard to imagine shows like The Addams Family and The Munsters being on in prime time. It was a special time of innocence for TV, where the dramatic changes happening in society had to be reflected through the lens of misfit families.
When it comes to Halloween family movie nights for older kids and teens, you might tend to revert to old favorites. The key secret ingredient to live action The Addams Family’s success is one part nostalgia and one part wickedly dark humor.
Of course when Hollywood sinks its fangs into a reboot of a classic TV show, it’s bound to come up with something edgier. Such is the case for The Addams Family live action movie from 1991, which is itself now a classic.
It’s being released for the first time on Blu-ray as a two-movie collection with Addams Family Values. I say it’s the perfect excuse cozy up for a double feature with that giant bowl of candy for the trick or treaters who didn’t show up.
In live action The Addams Family, Gomez reunites with his long-lost brother Fester, who has returned after 25 long years in the Bermuda Triangle. But is it the real Fester or an imposter? In Addams Family Values, Morticia has a baby, much to Wednesday’s chagrin, and Fester marries a beautiful woman who is too good to be true.
Both movies are rated PG13. You’re better off watching the 1960s TV show with your young kids. For older kids, the sexual innuendo and references to torture devices might be a bit much if they are sheltered. But if your tween is mature and already exposed to other PG13 movies, then they might just enjoy it.
Have a ooky good time!
