Childhood passes at the speed of light
My daughter is becoming such a little grownup! As a parent I mark time by her growing up, and just this past week I realized that, at age six, she’s outgrowing her “little kid” phase and quickly reaching “big kid” status. It’s not just that I can’t carry her anymore. It’s how independent she became overnight. Suddenly, I’m not the one reading the bedtime stories — she’s reading them to me! She’s pretending to go to “work,” where of course she has her own blog, and where she claims she has trouble getting time off. The artwork she creates in her alone time tells me that her creativity is expanding.
It pulls at my heart strings, yet I want to celebrate her growing up and her girl power. I wanted to find a way to honor that amazing big girl, and at the same time enjoy doing something special with her while she’s still this young. And something that can put all her remarkable creativity to good use.
I wanted her to have a special space where she can channel all that creativity, and also enjoy a good story or game. I came up with a retro DIY story corner idea, and I wanted Leilani to be able to share in the excitement of creating it.
Creating the retro DIY story corner
I wanted the story corner to be a cozy space-within-a-space in her room, a place where she could feel transported each time she’s there. I wanted her to feel that it’s truly her own, and it’s a spot where she can channel her creativity and enjoy the stories and games of her choice. I also wanted it to be a place where we could share those activities together — after all, we still need our girl time together! It was time to celebrate her growing up and to give her something that a big girl would dream of. That was how the DIY story corner idea began.
The concept for the DIY story corner started with a pink hoop canopy that Leilani already owned. The canopy had once gone over her bed, but I felt that it would be the perfect centerpiece for the story corner.
I knew we’d need something really cozy for her to be comfortable on the floor. The story corner really began to take shape on a recent trip to Walmart, where we found a retro hot pink shag throw rug. Leilani made the very “big girl” choice of a black shag throw pillow with pink and purple highlights (!). We also found a comfy pink fuzzy pillow, and (drum roll, please!)…a lava lamp!
Now, a lava lamp was something that I had in the bedroom at my grandmother’s house, so the idea of it brought many magical memories flooding back. I knew I wanted Leilani to be able to create her own magical memories with this lamp, and best of all, it’s pink.
To add even more magic, I found some rose fairy lights online. And to complete the look, we hung up some of Leilani’s recent artwork to decorate the corner. The DIY story corner took less than an hour to create.
If you’d like to create this retro DIY story corner, here’s what you’ll need:
— Hoop canopy (plus ceiling hook to hang canopy)
— Shag throw rug
— Comfy fuzzy large pillow for a back rest
— Shag throw pillow
— One string of rose fairy lights (available online–hung with picture hooks)
— Child’s original artwork for decoration
— Lava lamp
Getting more from life with Walmart Family Mobile PLUS
One thing I realized while we were creating this DIY story corner is that we are also outgrowing our current cell phone data plan. With time flying by the way it is, our data plan just wasn’t cutting it. I was finding myself taking tons of photos of Leilani and her little brother, but then not being able to send them to family for fear of running out of data. Of course, as a blogger I knew I was missing out on some great social media and blogging apps for my business.
Leilani wasn’t able to take advantage of the awesome interactive storybook and educational apps on the phone either. I wanted her to be able to enjoy some of the same apps used in her technology class at school right at home in her story corner. These apps fuel and inspire her creativity, so I was definitely disappointed that our phone plan was so limited that we couldn’t download them. Adding more data was just too expensive with our current plan.
But on that same trip to Walmart when we were planning the DIY story corner, I came across the solution in the electronics department while we were browsing for some DVDs for Leilani: it was a display for the Walmart Family Mobile PLUS plan. I decided to look into it.
It turns out it was just what I was looking for, and on top of that would add up to significant savings for us. The plan includes Unlimited Talk, Text, & Data, and get this: up to up to 10GB of 4G LTE data! And I couldn’t get over the price for this plan: each line is just $49.88 — no other cell phone plan I investigated can come close to matching this deal. I’d just received my tax refund, and I couldn’t think of a better way to put it to good use.
I finally found a cell phone plan that really suits our needs. We don’t have to stress about data overages with 10GB of 4G LTE. Now I can snap as many photos of Leilani as my heart desires, and then actually send them to my family with Unlimited Text and post them on social media whenever. I can call my parents in Texas and my in-laws in California whenever with Unlimited Talk. I can grow as a blogger by taking advantage of more social media apps, and Leilani can finally enjoy those awesome educational and story book apps.
What really sold me was the #DataAndAMovie perk: this plan includes a free movie on VUDU ($7 value) per line every month. It’s no secret that my family are movie buffs, so we were all over this plan feature. VUDU has all the latest home entertainment releases. I’m going to let Leilani choose the movie for us to watch in her story corner on our tablet.
I was thrilled with the selection of phones available with the Walmart Family Mobile PLUS plan. I definitely felt I was getting an amazing value with my tax refund with the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime for just $99.00 (rollback from $149.00). Not only is the phone the perfect size and weight, but the setup was incredibly user friendly. I’m extremely impressed with the quality of the photos.
The screen quality is outstanding for utilizing apps and watching videos. I also love how the letters and numbers on the key pad are spaced for ease of texting — this is definitely going to save me time.

We weren’t already using Walmart Family Mobile, so I had to purchase the $25.00 Starter Kit

service was super helpful.
Overall, I am so impressed with Walmart Family Mobile PLUS. It’s enhancing our lives in so
